UK has selected the Pakistani, Urdu-language feature film, My Pure Land for its submission for consideration for the 2018 Oscars in the foreign language film category. The film has been directed by Sarmad Masud.
The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the Bill Kenwright Films Production will be hopefully Britain’s Oscar this year. The film stars are Suhaee Abroo, Salman Ahmed Khan, Razia Malik,Tayyab Ifzal and Eman Fatima, who were seen in the lead roles.
The film was entirely shot in Pakistan that depicted the real events that took place which involved a mother and her two daughters who defended themselves against an army of some 200-odd bandits, who were out to save their house. The two have to eventually route to arms, to fight off troops led by their uncle. It is a true-based story. This film has been described as Feminist Western. The movie highlights the problem of land.
Suhaee Abroo, a dancer and actress, played therole in the film that is about Nazo Dharejo, a girl who grew up in rural Sindh with two sisters and a brother and lives on at the age of 41 as the ‘Toughest Woman In Sindh’ for saving her land from equipped bandits. The film is supposed to be a brittle and captivating portrayal of Pakistan’s rural life. This is the first time; Britain has submitted the Urdu-language film as its Oscar hopeful. The U.K. has only two times been listed in the foreign-language category until now: once in 1993 for Paul Turner’s Hedd Wyn and the second time in 1999 for Paul Morrison’s Solomon and Gaenor, both the films were shot in the Welsh language. The U.K. has, however, to win a foreign-language film Oscar. Although the film has covered the reality but its feminist influences are as much important as required.
My Pure Land has been produced by Bill Kenwright Films. It was premiered for the first time at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on 15th September and will have its U.K. bow on Friday. Its worldwide sales are being handed independently. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences is going to announce the nominees for best foreign-language film on Jan, 23. The 90th ceremony of Oscar’s award is going to hold its formal procedure on March 4th, 2018. If My Pure Land wins the award, it is going to be an exceptional moment and is going to create a history.
